about

Pleroma-Uroboros is an electronic musical realisation conceived as a sonic interpretarion of Jordi Martoranno's paintings for the exhibition of the same name.

According to Ken Wilber and his transpersonal view of human evolution, "Pleroma-Uroboros" is the term that designates primitive consciousness, just in the dawn of humanity, when rational thinking and language were starting to form in our stone age ancestors.

The music made by means of granular synthesis would like to suggest this specific evolutionary stage. It consists of a vast ocean of sound that symbolizes the Pleroma-Uroboros state, with continuous emerging and fading sounds symbolizing the ideas and concepts struggling to raise to consciousness, but never reaching their full form yet. In a symbolic manner, with the awakening of superior mental functions and intellect, mankind left the state of paradise-like preconsciousness, the Uroboros, and the oneness with nature, the Pleroma, and began to climb a ladder that has left it in a painful middle-place between animals (those who are unaware of their condition and mortality) and gods (those who have a complete consciousness and are immortal). With every step up in the ladder towards consciousness comes a price to pay: to be more aware upon our own condition and mortality, and therefore, pushing us further away from paradise.

In the words of art critic Magdala Perpinyà: "Jordi Martoranno’s painting is the result of the development of a symbolic vocabulary associated to the new theories that are the basis of scientific research on the origin of the universe and the new holographic paradigm of the world. Martoranno’s interest by modern science is likely linked to his study of Jung’s theories on archetypes and the Theory of Synchronicity. Indeed, the artist’s aesthetic search emerges as the result of a rigorous immersion in the patterns that rule over the rhythm of all elements. Thus, Martoranno’s paintings explore the constellar relationships, with a universal conception of the world that sees in the macrocosm and the microcosmo a dynamic unit that in turn is diversified across multiple correspondences, generating a network of phenomena that communicate between themselves. From this perspective, the paintings refer to the relationship inherent in all the elements, and, in this sense, art becomes a tool for the artist to transcend the dual vision of the world to access a state of social awareness of being part of a whole."

Pleroma-Uroboros was exhibited in El Quadern Robat gallery in Barcelona, from 8th november 2018 to 2nd february 2019. The piece was premiered on 19th january 2019.

The artist would like to give special thanks to gallery's curator Anna Belsa for her continuous support.
